Tips for hiring an interior designer

1. Find the right designer for you:

Go to a designer’s website and see their style—if that fits your look and feel, great. If they seem to have a cookie cutter approach and you’re looking for something unique and funky, skip that one.  Otherwise, keep looking since they probably aren’t a good fit.

2. Be upfront, honest, and realistic about your budget:

Pay can vary anywhere from $150 to $500 per hour. They will be on hand to create a design plan and there through the full implementation.

3. Research ballpark costs of your project

If you’re doing custom work (cabinets, built in bookcases, etc) you’re going to be paying more.

4. Find out how the designer is going to bill you

How much there a retainer? How much is the mark up fee when they buy products on your behalf? How often and how much will you have to pay upfront? Be sure to read the interior designers billing method thoroughly, and carefully.

5. Trust the designer's relationships

The designer will know who the good contractors (and the bad ones) are in the neighborhood. Trust their judgement when it comes to finding people to do handiwork.
