50 States in 50 Days: Georgia

Havona and the Stony Cooks -- again!

From the Katherine Fletcher collection
Its been a productive week here at the nerve center. Mrs Malchman came through with Arkansas and we were able to mention both escaped pythons and ravenous Gambian pouch rats in a single post. We now need only Kansas, Mississippi, North Dakota and Wyoming. I would be lying if I tried to pretend I'm not feeling somewhat wistful, only four to go... but then my inner, hard-nosed, veteran reminds me that these could be the hardest to find of all.
Today's state is Georgia. Katherine Fletcher was kind enough to lend us this photo from her extensive collection. The other comes to us from none other than Havona and the Stony Cooks who snagged this beauty on a recent expedition through the untamed backstreets of Park Slope.
Gerorgia, "The Peach State" was the last of the 13 original colonies. She, (yes, Rhett, "she") was named for George the sixth, King of England, with whom the colonies were destined to fall out, and the very same George who went on to suffer from madness and blue urine. He was not married to Helen Mirren, though she was great in the movie.
Georgia is the 9th most populous state and is bordered by North Carolina, and Tennessee on the north, South Carolina and Alabama on the west Florida on the South and the Atlantic Ocean on the East. She produces agricultural products like peaches, peanuts, pigs and poultry, eggs, tobacco, cattle, turf grass and vegetables. She manufactures textiles, lumber products and minerals. Coca Cola is headquarted in Atlanta.
Georgia has the best song by far of any state, Georgia on My Mind.

Famous Georgians include: Jimmy Carter, Ray Charles, Ty Cobb, Lawrence Fishburn, Hulk Hogan, Jasper Johns, Martin Luther King, Jr, Gladys Knight, The Pips, Brenda Lee, Bling Willie McTell, Odis Redding, Little Richard, Jackie Robinson, Alice Walker, Ray Stevens, Nipsey Russell and Joanne Woodward. Wow.
