Comment:  I had a really terrible experience with another OB-GYN in Manhattan before switching to the practice at Fayez Guirgis. We had a failed pregnancy and the other OB and the staff at Lenox Hill Hospital made a traumatic incident even more stressful. I was able to make an appointment with Jill Swenson at Guirgis before I was pregnant again (this time successfully with our daughter!). Dr. Swenson was incredibly sympathetic and supportive as I explained what had happened. One of the midwives at the practice, Kathryn, ended up delivering our daughter but I had check ups with everyone. All were supportive of my decisions to have a doula and delivery naturally (i.e. no drugs). I delivered at Methodist in Park Slope which was also a positive experience. My only complaint about Dr. Guirgis's office is that it is often very crowded.Member notes about insurance: They accept my (awful) city employee insurance, GHI. My only problems have been with my insurance company, not Dr. Guirgis's office.Based on a January 2016 birthing experience

Subject:  Re: [ANONYMOUS] Advice on 2nd pregnancy after preeclampsia
Comment:  I'm happy to share my story. I had HELLP syndrome diagnosed at 38 weeks and was induced. My then-OB diagnosed me with pre-eclampsia around 30ish weeks, and I was put on partial bed rest (i.e. Working from home and limiting my movement), got a lot of NST scans. I felt like my entire first pregnancy was one scary thing after another, culminating in a 24-hour labor and emergency c-section that was really tough to recover from. For my second pregnancy, I was nervous. I was determined to switch OB practices -- I wanted good doctors with experience with high-risk pregnancies, but a practice that wouldn't treat the whole pregnancy as an episode of Fear Factor. So I ended up at Guirguis in the neighborhood and LOVED them. They monitored me really closely, had me take baby aspirin early on (there's a study that says it can prevent pre-eclampsia), and my pregnancy was completely different! I had zero health issues - not even one elevated blood pressure reading. They went through my pathology report and surgical report from my first labor to help inform treatment this time around. I honestly could not be happier with my treatment.Anyway, I decided to schedule a c-section to avoid a long labor followed by a potential c-section. I went into labor on my own a few days ahead of the plan, and delivered my second with no issues just last week at Methodist. (dr Guirguis came in to Methodist at 6 am on a Saturday to do my section, even.)

Comment:  REVIEW: Great practice if you want a low-intervention birth. I ended up with them because my fertility OB, who was pregnant herself, used them. Solid endorsement. I was >40, IVF pregnancy, and they were very laid-back while still being very responsive. Had a fantastic birth with a walking epidural and it was exactly what I wanted. Had a midwife deliver. I liked all the practitioners except Old Man Guirgis--but he didn't do my delivery. And he was amazing when Methodist was being ridiculous about discharging me. He made it happen by being an awesome curmodgeon. Their office practice is the typical terrible experience with inexcusably long waits. INSURANCE They take a lot of insuramce. It was great, easy, I spent nothing out of pocket. Based on a April 2015 birth

Comment:  REVIEW: I liked the midwives most at this practice. I found Dr. Guirguis a little old fashioned. Since you end up working with whoever is on call when you go into labor, we ended up with him. I trusted his medical opinion but felt that he could have been more thoughtful and patient. I was really glad my partner and doula were there. INSURANCE GHI...no problems Based on a June 2015 birth

Comment:  Member Review: Dr. Guirguis and team is my primary OB-GYN and delivered my first child at NY Methodist hospital this past October. I found all the staff at Dr. Guirguis' office to be friendly, knowledgeable and supportive throughout my pregnancy and postpartum care. I was between Dr. Guirguis and Park Slope Midwives when deciding who I wanted to deliver my baby. I really wanted to be attended by midwives, but felt more comfortable with Dr. Guirguis after visiting both offices. Half of Dr. Guirguis' staff are midwives and the practice definitely possesses an ethos more aligned with midwifery. Like most practices, the team alternates who is on call for deliveries so you have no real control over who will be with you on the big day, but by luck I delivered on the day Kathryn and Elisabeth (both midwives) were on call. I couldn't have asked for a smoother or better delivery. Both women were phenomenal and I wouldn't hesitate to deliver all my future children with Dr. Guirguis and his team. Insurance details: I'm a NYC employee and had no problem with Dr. Guirguis taking my insurance. I never had to file any claims. Review based on birth of 2014 baby

Comment:  Member Review: I have been exceedingly happy with Dr. Guirguis's practice. I love the ability to have the expertise of the doctors and the low-intervention approach of the midwives. The practice does everything possible to facilitate 1) a healthy baby and 2) a vaginal birth. In addition, everyone (front desk staff/nurses/midwives/doctors) are exceedingly happy and positive. This is an ideal environment to help cope with all of the uncertainties of pregnancy. I'll never forget when one of the midwives was doing an ultrasound when I was 32 weeks pregnant, still feeling nervous about everything. She first did the examination for his health and that everything looked normal of course, and she just gushed about how beautiful he was and how excited she was for me. It was really great to feel that connection. Insurance details: No issues with insurance, except that when I needed weekly stress tests at the end of my pregnancy, I should have done them at Dr Guirguis's office instead of NY Methodist Hospital down the street. The cost out-of-pocket was DRASTICALLY different (approx $500) at the hospital versus at Dr Guirguis's even with insurance covering both options. I had only opted for the hospital because scheduling seemed easier. Just a heads up to those hat need weekly stress tests! Review based on birth of 2014 baby

Comment:  I just delivered at Methodist with Dr Guirguis's practice in June. My doctor was Dr Swensen from the practice and I thought she was wonderful, she's like a doula and a doctor all rolled into one. She's very caring, thoughtful and professional. All the staff at their office and lovely, I'd have been happy delivering with any of them.I'm new to the States (from England) so I did a LOT of research on where to deliver. In summary I discovered that although the Methodist previously had a poor reputation it has improved tremendously in the last couple of years and generally people are pretty happy with it now.I was REALLY REALLY HAPPY with my delivery. The staff were very attentive, they stuck to my birth plan and they were very caring and thoughtful. The aftercare I received was also excellent. I made use of the free daily breastfeeding classes and I also had the lactation consultant come in several times (at the push of a button!) to give me personalised guidance. Also, you can have a private room for $200 at Methodist rather than the ridiculous $800+ they charge in Manhattan,I was really impressed and if I'm still in the states when I have my next child I will definitely go there again.

Subject:  Re: Anyone do a VBAC with Dr. Guirguis' practice?
Comment:  I just saw Dr. Guirguis based on PSP recommendations, but not for VBAC. I'm having menopausal issues. My former doctor was Dr. Hockstein, affiliated with New York Hospital on the UES and I love him. He and other members of his practiced delivered me. I almost had a c-section due to slow dialation and slow labor along with a fever, but somehow things got moving and out came my son. But now I'm in Brooklyn and I don't think he's taking my insurance :-(.I had an hour wait for Dr. Guirguis. His office was very crowded. He didn't seem to listen that well as I had to repeat things. I asked him about bio identicals and he was nonplussed about them. I had mentioned that I had hormone therapy and the pill before which made certain symptoms worse. I also asked about diet for hot flashes to which he had no answer. I can't speak to the VBAC, but I was disappointed about the lack of guidance for going through peri or plain old menopause. I have to pick up a prescription of some sort of hormones at the drugstore this afternoon.I would love to hear other current opinions about Dr. Guirguis. Also, in general, I'm not a fan of Methodist Hospital.

Comment:  I too had to switch OB's and was looking for someone who takes GHI. I just started going to the office of Dr. Fayez Guirguis (I have seen Dr. Jill Ann Swenson there, but only twice) and have been pleased so far. I know they have an office right in Bay Ridge, though I'm not sure if all the doctors practice there, or just Dr.Guirguis. I go to the office in Park Slope which is on 3rd Street off 7th Avenue. Not totally off the R train, but the Bay Ridge office may suit your needs.

Comment:  I HIGHLY recommend the practice of Dr Guirguis. All 3 doctors, the midwife, and the NP in the practice are AMAZING. I had a VBAC with them this past May and found them all to be incredibly helpful and encouraging. They deliver at Methodist, so that may not work for you, but I thought I'd mention it because I really do believe in these doctors.

Comment:  I just had a little girl last week after a high risk pregnancy (placenta previa among three or four other high risk factors). I went to Dr. Guirguis (Peter the son) and he did not use Dr. Kofinas in tandem so everything was covered by insurance. He and the others in this practice were completely on top of the high risk factors and my baby and I are both in good health. I had a C section at Methodist and the surgery and after care went really well. I stay home with my three year old so it was really helpful to keep all appointments, ultrasounds, etc. local.

Comment:  My midwife's name is Elisabeth Markus-Sullivan and she works in the practice of Dr. Fayez Guirguis. I have been very impressed with both the midwife and the doctors' attitudes which are very midwife-like. As a VBAC, I am high risk pregnancy, but they are still willing to let me go to 42 weeks if my fluids and the baby are fine, they are ok with me laboring at home as long as possible, they are ok with eating and drinking in labor and seem to be very willing to respect the birth plan you are going for. I have heard very positive things from other parents who have recently had their babies with both the doctors and the midwife in this practice. They deliver at methodist hospital which has recently undergone a change in management for labor and delivery and is apparently very progressive and much improved. Maybe a practice like this that has OBs but is very supportive of a midwife model could be an option.September 2012
