Comment:  Another high recommend for Beansprouts!Beansprouts also run Early Spouts— an Early Intervention evaluation and therapy service agency—so they are absolutely brilliant with EI tots. Services are seamless and thoughtful, integrated when possible and pull-out when not (OT and PT were the highlight of my kid’s day). No big deal, no stigma, just a huge enhancement to my child’s early development. The providers we had through Early Sprouts, without exception, were the absolute best we have encountered. If you don’t have an agency, I highly recommend Early Sprouts. If you already have an agency and therapists you like, give Beansprouts a call and ask if they could work there with your child if you enroll.

Comment:  I'd like to second my love for Beansprouts.D. will be 2 at the end of this month. At beansprouts went from like 10 words to like 100+ words in like 2 weeks -- including some spanish words! It also helped with her socialization, she's much better about saying hello and goodbye now (she got kind of out of practice when we all locked ourselves away for months). Now she's stringing together 2-3 words like "Mommy's shoes", "orange pumpkin", "bumpy gourd", or "Big poop", or "my toy". Everyday there is some new surprising word that she pulls out of her back pocket that she is now using all the time. She literally dances with joy at the thought of going there and while we are walking there. and I'd second everything that M. says about small class size, outdoor space, and I also really love the photos they take. Totally worth it. You can tell they've been doing this for 40 years.

Comment:  We are enrolled at BeanSprouts in Park Slope and we love it. We wanted to send him just for the additional socialization and stimulation since we just had a second (now 3 months old), but I didn't realize how much he'd be really learning. The difference in a short time is remarkable. Our kid is young (just turned 2 October 6) and since he started Beansprouts, he has started speaking in fuller, more complex sentences ("I need help with this one!"), being more polite (pleases and thank yous, good mornings and hellos/good byes/ hugs), and is repeating things that demonstrate real learning. The other day he got very quiet and then held a finger up and said, "A siren, I hear it. I hear the firetruck!" He now puts away all of his toys without any fussing and he sings himself the Clean up Clean up song. The class is very small (~8 kids), they have dedicated outdoor space, a teacher and a teaching assistant. Each month we get a monthly calendar and there is some theme to the month that's sort of building on itself. It's very child-centered rather than adult-directed and yet there is still a lot of structure and social learning going on. Each week they send an update email with a link to photos. They do lots of tactile/ sensory exploration, lots of art, movement, and centers.I have been super impressed with the experience so far!

Comment:  Beansprouts— overall, were very happy. My son attended 3 days wk last yr in a 2s class (3 teachers), 9am - 12pm. We regretted not doing 5 days. He’s back for the 3s class now (2 teachers), 3 hr AMs, but 5 days/wk. It’s fantastic! We’re SO happy he’s there. One of the reasons we chose them was having the shorter day option. We did not at all like the idea of a longer standard day where we pulled him out earlier than his peers. That felt incomplete and disjointed. The full-session routine was really impt to us. He starts and ends the day (AM) with his whole cohort.I had one big gripe last yr— 2/3 of his teachers spoke in very extra-fake-happy voices. High-pitched, squeaky, just... not at all aligned with our values or parenting style. It was infuriating. This yr, we had our virtual teacher meet-up before the 3s class launched, and the teacher didn’t seem nearly as fake-happy. Whew. She did do the thing where she asked “dumb” leading questions. We were on Zoom at 6pm and L. was eating pizza. She asked in a high-pitched tone, “is that a snack? Is that a snack??” L. looked at her, then me, and appeared dumbfounded. “No, it’s dinner time. I’m eating pizza.” (Were just the epitome of health!). He knew he was being infantilized. Bleghhh. I gave the teacher some gentle feedback about L. disliking being asked questions with a prescribed answer and followed up at our first in-person meeting, the 1:1 play date. Both years, he’s LOVED school. The flow and curriculum are great. They are such a well-run, well-oiled organization. They have on-site backyards with playgrounds. The social aspect is far more impt to me than actual instruction. We hardly care if L. is taught something formal, so long as he practices pro-social behavior (he’s a bit feral and stubborn at home ha!).I recommend Beansprouts, but I think my caveat is also impt to include.

Comment:  Our son is enrolled in Beansprouts’ 4s program right now. He was going to attend K280 this year, but we wanted him to attend Pre-K full-time so we switched him to Beansprouts when the public schools’ hybrid model was announced. He had attended Beansprouts’ 2s and 3s programs as well, so it was an easy choice for us. (Although we were definitely bummed not to switch over to free schooling!)I can’t compare it to what K280 offers since we never got a chance to attend. But I can say that our son is LOVING his 4s program at Beansprouts so far and seems purely delighted to attend school each day. It also helps that he knew kids in his class from previous years at Beansprouts.I’ve been really happy with his teachers this year, and every year that he’s been at Beansprouts. And having the ease and comfort of another year there this year has felt like such a gift. Seeing our son so happy has been the ultimate validation of our decision.

Comment:  A few key differences between Beansprouts and K280:Where Beansprouts is very organized, K280 is absolutely not and it will grate on your nerves. I had 2 friends this year who didn’t get their class assignment until AFTER school had started and the administration was not responsive. And one got two assignments! I don’t know why they’re like that, I had a totally different administration when my oldest went but stuff like that happened then too.One of my favorite things about K280 is the cluster classes, there are phenomenal Music, Art, and Movement teachers, like actual kid magician teachers. Also Science class with an actual lab! But the wonderful Science teachers from 2 years ago are apparently on sabbatical or retired, so I can’t speak to the new one. But I don’t think you’ll get that same level at Beansprouts. One of my other favorite things about K280: it is an actual slice of NYC’s population. Kids from all kinds of families go there from all over Brooklyn, and you just don’t get that level of diversity at Beansprouts. How Reggio Emilia K280 is definitely depends on what teacher you get. We LOVED our fantastic teacher and hope we get her again, but I’d say she was Reggio-lite.There is no dedicated permanent outdoor playground at K280. They have been saying for years (said it on my tour 2 years ago): “This is the year we’re getting one!”, so who knows. They have some mats and play stuff set up on a blacktop instead. Beansprouts has multiple playground spaces.

Comment:  Review: My son is in the 2s program at Beansprouts and seems very happy. We signed him up for their 3s program next year. We like it very much, although, we don't love it. Their curriculum is good, as is their teacher:student ratio. They have highly flexible summer camp options, which worked quite well for us, even as a "rising 2" student. We do not like that 2/3 teachers, including the head teacher, speak in an overly cheery and high pitched voice when talking to the children. It feels disingenuous and is now how we speak to our son. When family members visit from out of town, they might do a pre-school pick up. More than one has noted the "too happy" demeanor and felt it was odd. We have a different style, so this rubs us the wrong way. We also do not love the music program. My son has a wonderful time and comes home singing the songs, so it's an overall win. However, for the tuition, I'd prefer some Vivaldi with interpretive dance versus Baby Shark (although, the accompanying puppet is a hit - go figure). A big plus is that they are an extremely well-oiled machine. We use a dependent care account to cover some of the tuition costs and it's a seamless bureaucratic operation with their Parent Coordinator. Everything really is seamless because they are so well-organized. That was a big reason we re-upped for a 3s program. Another thing we like is that all children end the day together. My son's 2s class all depart at at noon (vs, some kids leaving and others staying later). We like the cohesion. The same will be in effect for next yr in the 3s class, as the full-day kiddos are in their own classroom. Lastly, they are competitively priced. Beansprouts is not cheap, but it's not hard to find other nearby options that cost more. Despite my disappointment in the music curriculum and the "too happy/high-pitched" faces and voices, it felt like a good option for next year. Nothing is perfect and Beansprouts checks off a lot of boxes that are important to us. My son is very happy there, and that seems like a good measure of success for his first year in school. … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours … What would you change? improved music curriculum

The Beansprouts curriculum seems to be a lot of learning by doing, child centered, creative, imaginative and progressive in the ways one wants preschool to be. My son has learned the routines and rhythms of being in a school setting, made lots of friends, and adored all of his teachers. The teacher comes to your house before school starts so your child can meet the teacher which helps with the transition. In each semester there are parent-teacher conferences where we have found that the teachers give thoughtful and helpful feedback on how are son is doing. The "specials" are great - music, gym, and Spanish, and lots of fun projects in the classroom, like different cooking experiments. This October they had a farmer come to school and show how to make apple cider. Every week the teacher sends an email summarizing what your child learned that week, and also there is a photo sharing site where parents can see it in action. About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options What would you change? I think Beansprouts could do more to build and leverage its parent community. This year they have organized a few parent coffee hours, but I think there is a lot more potential for an active and engaged parent community.

Comment:  Our daughter enjoys her time at Beansprouts. The days are filled with play and discovery, and the teachers are extremely attentive and communicative. There is always something new to do, from arts&crafts to yoga to music class, yet the days are very structured. I feel the teachers truly understand each child and care about each individual's development. Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours, Provides snacks in after school program What would you change? I would change the snacks that they serve (they aren't the healthiest).

Comment:  My son did the 2s program at Beansprouts - 2 days/week for half days. He loved it! His classroom was in the Methodist church. He loved his friends and the teachers Brittany and Ciara and all the activities they did. Beansprouts created a warm and loving environment for him to learn new skills with his friends. He especially loved the weekly music session with Brianna, and playing with the cars in the playground. The Beansprouts classrooms are well designed and the playground is great. We had a parent teacher conference in the fall and in the spring with Brittany in which I learned a lot about my son and what skills we should be working on that are developmentally appropriate. I found Brittany to be very observant of O's personality and likes and dislikes. We are very happy with beansprouts and are planning to send him to the 3s program there as well. About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours. What would you change? While there have been a few opportunities to parents to get together at the school with the kids, it would be nice to have more of them to get to know his classmates and their parents.

Comment:  Our son started at Beansprouts in the 2s program, and this year he is in a 3s class. We've had a great experience. The teachers are engaging and well-trained. The school has been around for a long time and the administration is responsive and efficient. Our son has an IEP and the school has been very accommodating about any special arrangements that he's needed. He has learned an incredible amount while at Beansprouts and clearly loves going there. The atmosphere is down-to-earth and friendly. The facilities aren't fancy and could definitely use an upgrade, and that may turn off some families. But as a result you end up with a nice group of parents who wish to send their kids to a community-oriented preschool.About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours.

Comment:  The program was outstanding in every way. Curriculum was creative, hands-on, play based, and nicely varied; plenty of room for teachers to let kids follow their interests. Great enrichment activities: yoga, movement, Spanish, music. Lovely yard full of trees and flowers, with space to run and ride trikes. The best part: awesome, engaged teachers who fostered kids’ social and emotional development. We were thrilled and would highly recommend this program.About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options. What would you change? Having to pre-pay tuition so many months before kids actually start school. Unfair burden on families who need childcare the year before preschool starts.

Comment:  My son has been in Beansprouts since he was 2 and will graduate out of the 4s program this year. We - and most important, he - have LOVED the school and will miss it enormously. The teachers are loving, fun, and creative, and they foster a great sense of exploration and independence. At Beansprouts, he has: hatched chicks from eggs, explored Prospect Park, followed the life cycle of a caterpillar (with a live one going through metamorphosis in class), made juice on an apple press, made his first true friends, been potty trained, learned his letters and numbers.About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours. What would you change? Comment:  Teachers are excellent, my daughter has grown and learned so much, we have been really impressed with the overall enriched environment. My only complaint is that you must pay by check or direct deposit and you must begin paying monthly installments immediately. For nearly $20k a year I’d really love to put it on my credit card to get some benefit through rewards, and with all the urgency they place on signing up, i have felt as though they’re rushing you so they can start getting money from you. It’s a shame because otherwise it’s a really lovely school and we are truly happy with the actual school experience.About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours. What would you change? More flexibility with payment schedules and paying my credit card.
