Volunteer Opportunities

 Be sure to peruse this list of food pantries and community organizations PSP and our members have partnered with before over the Thanksgiving holiday. Here are specific volunteer opportunies:

 

Decorate CHiPS!
When: Monday-Saturday, after 4 p.m. and Sunday all day.
What: CHiPS also needs interested volunteers to decorate its soup kitchen for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Volunteers will have to bring own decorations.
Where: 200 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217
Who is CHiPS? Chips in Community Help in Park Slope, Inc,  a 501(c)(3) nonprofit soup kitchen and women’s shelter in Park Slope. CHiPS has provided hot meals to the hungry and homeless since 1971 and they began providing transitional housing and support services for young mothers and their infants in the late 1990s. CHiPS currently houses up to 8 pregnant and postpartum homeless young women at a time, along with their infants, in its Frances Residence above the soup kitchen. Last year, CHiPS served approximately 103,000 meals to its neighbors in need.

Open Hearts Community Dinner
When: Sunday, November 26. 12:45 p..m. to 5 p.m.
Open Hearts will help prepare and serve a community dinner for the homeless in Brooklyn Heights, various jobs need filling in time slots running throughout the afternoon..
Who are Open Hearts? Open Hearts are a community of families exploring the values of connection, empathy, compassion and service to the earth and all its inhabitants through play and activism. They get together once a month and work with a different community or organization to open our awareness of those around us, and empower ourselves to help heal the world.

Food Drives

 

CHiPS
When: Donations for Thanksgiving Day will be received starting on Wednesday, November 22nd at 1 p.m.
What they need: CHiPS is in need of the following items (preferably in a Thanksgiving pattern or color and durable):
   - Disposable Plates
   - Disposable Bowls
   - Disposable Napkins
   - Disposable Cups (for both hot and cold drinks)
   - Plastic Silverware
   - Table cloths (10 rectangular tables, around 60" long)
   - To-Go-Containers

CBE Pie Drive
When: Drop off from Monday, November 13th through Monday, November 20th for the CBE Luncheon on Tuesday, November 21st.
What they need: Pies are the big Thanksgiving push. 
Where: 274 Garfield Pl, by security 
Who is CBE? CBE is Congregation Beth Elohim, fondly known as CBE, offers authentic, meaningful and outside the box Jewish experiences for those in our Brooklyn community and beyond. They are deeply committed to education for all ages, community-building, spiritual life, and social justice. This Thanksgiving, they are helping the Refugee Task Force, a group that builds coalitions with other NYC synagogues, pushes legislators to protect refugees, and supports refugees directly.

 

Turkey Trots

 

2017 PPTC Turkey Trot

When: November 23, 2017 at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Prospect Park, Brooklyn
What: One of Brooklyn’s most popular races, this spectacular 5-miler is the perfect way to kick off your holiday season! The early start time guarantees you’ll make it home for turkey. Walkers are welcome, but due to liability reasons they cannot allow strollers or pets.

New York City Turkey Trot

When: November 25, 2017 at 8 am (Last Minute Packet Pickup)
Where: Firefighters Field, 425 Main St., Roosevelt Island, NY
What: Traditional run/walk on Roosevelt Island. There are three races: a 5K (one loop), a 15K races (three loops) plus a Kids Dash.

When: November 19, 2017 at 11:30 a.m.

Events

 

91st Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
When: Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, 9 a.m. (or watch the balloons being inflated the night before! More info here >)
Where: There's 2.5 miles of public viewing! The parade will begin at 9 a.m. from 77th Street and Central Park  West. The procession will march to Columbus  Circle, turn onto Central Park South and march down 6th Avenue/Avenue of the Americas. At 34 th  Street, the Parade will make its final turn west a nd end at 7th  Avenue in front of Macy’s Herald Square.

Holiday Tree Lighting in the Slope
When: Saturday, November 25, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Where: 5th Ave and 4th St
What: 5th Avenue's BID annual tree lighting ceremony. Songs (so many wonderful songs!!), puppets, treats, refreshments, treats and your awesome neighbors will all help make this a fun, festive way to kick off the Holidays in the Slope! Can you tell we are getting excited?
